LNG Project

SCD Joint Venture

SCD is a Joing Venture of Saipem of Italy, Chiyoda of Japan and Daewoo of Korea.

The NLNG Train 7 project consists of the construction of one complete LNG train and one additional liquefaction unit plus other associated utilities and infrastructure.

The new unit will add around 8 million tonnes per annum of capacity to the Bonny Island facility, taking the total to around 30 mtpa.

Teknobuilt worked with SCD over the course of the Project execution to help them realise the inherent benefits of AWP and WorkFace Planning.

What were the Challenges?

  • Implementation of digital transformation at a large scale was difficult
  • Existing systems were incompatible for full digital delivery
  • Teams were located across continents making coordination and communication a challenge

How we resolved the challenges?

The people (company culture), processes, locations and the existing internal IT systems were managed by forming a cross-company AWP core team. Teknobuilt’s PACE OS was used as it has an embedded AWP method. Through a unique approach of AWP simulation on an identified area of the project, the entire project execution from engineering to construction was performed using AWP principles. With this end-to-end AWP introduction, the core AWP team became internal AWP champions and helped drive the implementation.

  • The AWP system was configured and customized to make it compatible to the existing processes and IT (Information Technology) systems.
  • Digital data integration with the existing JV IT systems ensured seamless dataflow and automation of relevant engineering documents through the project DMS (Document Management System). The resulting benefits were reduced manual efforts and elimination of double handling the data.
  • On-boarding of the JV engineering team was done using a three-pronged approach:
    • intensive discipline workshops,
    • paper-based engineering deliverables (EWP) preparation and
    • hands-on training sessions on the AWP OS (Operating System)

A playbook with engineering process workflows, standard operating procedures, role-based details, AWP system screen-shots and use cases was specifically created and distributed to enable user adoption.

What was the impact?

  • Teknonbuilt introduced automation for EWP production that resulted in significant man hour reduction
  • The engineering leads and managers bought in completely as there was no duplicity of work after they created design documents through automated EWPs
  • Achieved full scale integration with existing design tools and engineering reference systems was achieved
  • PACE OS enabled digital collaboration, improved inter-disciplined coordination and alignment across departments such as project controls, construction and commissioning
  • Forged better alignment between the JV partners separated across time zones and organizational structures
  • Enabled remote working, remote processing and reviewing across all stakeholders including client and maintained continuity during the pandemic situation
  • Provided instantaneous visibility and granularity across packages and the individual documents
